The Company closed out its 25th and final season on September 14, 2021 at The Kennedy Center Eisenhower Theater. As part of the show, our long-time PD partner, David Leventhal of Mark Morris Dance Group’s Dance for PD program announced our partnerships with The Kennedy Center, George Mason University’s School of Dance and Maryland Youth Ballet to continue free Dance for Parkinson’s Disease (Dance for PD®) classes.
Securing a future for BMDC’s Dance for PD Program was an organizational priority in the nonprofit’s dissolution plan (effective October 31, 2021). The continuation of the PD programs demonstrates Lucy Bowen’s lasting commitment to serving the Parkinson’s Disease community.
“It was important to me that people living with Parkinson’s continue to have easy access across the entire DC Metro area. To partner with these three iconic institutions in the DC Metro region is an absolute dream, and will ensure that the program lives on into the next generation.,” said Lucy Bowen.
More of a “third act” to her career than a retirement, Lucy Bowen’s first task after the October 31, 2021 closure of BMDC will be training teaching artists to help lead these FREE classes at all three locations. Notably, the partnership with George Mason will integrate Dance for PD instruction into the dance education curriculum, ensuring that the next generation of dancers can carry on this important work.

Helping dancers, elite athletes, and anyone who values the freedom of movement and strong emotional well being.
The Bowen McCauley Stretch technique uses a series of continuous movement and deep breathing to progress into each stretch. This slow-paced technique increases elasticity in the muscles and freedom in the joints while incorporating deep breathing, which helps to de-stress both the mind and body. The stretch process emphasizes proper alignment and interdependence of good posture and flexibility. There is no bouncing but instead postures are held for eight counts and repeated for four sets and recovery time is minimal.
The Bowen McCauley Stretch technique was pioneered in the 1980s by Lucy in collaboration with her mentor and exercise physiologist, the late Jean Paul Mustone.

“McCauley’s stretch class taught me how to stretch and gain more flexibility, which helps prevent injuries. I credit all of the work from the stretch class as the preventive measure that kept me from injuries during the Olympic gymnasts tour.”
